FOUNDATION

FOUNDATION: Foundation is a photographic series capturing traditions, relationships, creation, and connections. It is autobiographical to my personal experience but can be relative to others as the general concepts are more broad. These images capture some traditions I have within my family and how creation is connective piece to that. The images of my Grandmother making pecan cookies and pancakes are representative of how tradition is something that people rely on for connection. She uses basic ingredients like flour and sugar which are metaphorical to her characteristics of being reliable, stable, and consistent in my life. Her hands are also reoccurring as that is her outlet in which she expresses herself much like me with art but her medium is food. Her hands work with care and intent across the many ways she uses them. The other photographs within the series are capturing the space. The house is comforting by storing the many years of memories made and where the traditions take place. The themes in the series are supposed to engage with the viewer by making them consider what connects them with others and significance of tradition.

UNCOVERED ARCHIVES

UNCOVERED ARCHIVES: This photo series explores themes relating to people, space, memory, and ephemera. As people grow, change, move, and interact with space the walls stay consistent but energy in that space is active and transitional. The setting of these images is a home that has had generations of families through decades live in it. My father works as a painter and he has done both commercial and residential work. He is a witness of seeing how people change and interact with space as it is cycled through throughout years of occupancy. Despite the absence of people, the energy, objects, smells, etc. that remain tell a story of its own about the remnants left of people and what their time in that location potentially looked like. The habits and routines they have, their interests and hobbies, the wear on the ground from the repetition of steps taken in the particular spot on the carpet. Peoples impressions stay despite the changes that occur.

INDUSTRIAL WINTER

INDUSTRIAL WINTER: These images capture the old industrial areas in Cincinnati by Spring Grove. The area of Spring Gove was an historical manufacturing hub contributing to the development of the city of Cincinnati. Spring Grove was a connective site for the well known railroads in Cincinnati to transport these products. The slowness and stillness that winter has correlates how time has gone on these once busy manufacturers have decreased production overtime due to decline of specific industries, global competition, and redevelopment.

MOULIN SERIES

MOULIN SERIES: Moulins or glacier mills are circular well-like formations that can vary sizes and are created by meltwater wearing down weak spots in ice. It is a geomorphic process as the landform shifts and changes. As the water proceeds to flow over the ice, it continuously pours downward wearing the ice further. The reason of documenting small moulins is to illustrate the inevitability of change and how small actions or patterns are impactful overtime. This idea can be applicable to different aspects of life and can bring connections between people and nature.

ITALY AND SWITZERLAND

ITALY AND SWITZERLAND: This collection of photos is a documentation of my exploration through different landscapes, cultures, and new places. Through these photos I intended to document my travels capturing surreal and immersive moments and the moods each location carried. From busy streets in Florence, Italy to desolate train stations in earlier mornings, each photo holds the energy in that particular moment of time.

CINCINNATI/NORTHERN KETUCKY

CINCINNATI/NORTHERN KENTUCKY: In these photos it documents architectural elements in the local area, scenes of transition, everyday sights, times of day, and different textures. Each photo carries a mood and a story behind it. The architecture photos highlight distinct elements to the buildings with different angels and framing. Doors, ladders, windows, and telephone poles demonstrate scenes of tension, transition, and human connection between nature and environment. Within some of these photos access is restrained causing questioning of what is on the other side of those areas. The lighting and time of day help develop the mood or feeling of the images. Highlighting texture creates visual interest by creating depth and emphasizing details.

CYCLE THROUGH

CYCLE THROUGH: In this photographic and performative series child neglect is represented through documentation of kids’ clothes being exposed to different materials and spaces. Material coincides with emotions and the clothes themself are representing humanness with a lack of the physical form to further the feelings of emptiness and isolation. Compositionally, each image alternates wide shots and close ups to portray the craving of connection and push and pull of seeking to be noticed and identified. With transitioning and flipping these perspectives it makes it difficult for the observer to recognize the subject matter. With the first image titled “Ice,” there is a sense of claustrophobia and coldness to show the feelings of entrapment and emotional numbness that comes with neglect. “Grounded,” has parallels to being grounded through parenting along with the attempt to stay grounded in an environment that has instability. “Wine,” attempts to bring humanity into the images as red wine is often associated with blood. The clothes are bottled up and confined like emotions having to be contained. “Afloat” acts as a fading out of the series with the fog and the ice connecting back with the first part of the series. The title represents the attempt to stay afloat when on the verge of drowning in loneliness. The materials embed into the fibers of the clothes and remain, similar to how trauma and memory from experience stay with a person despite being out of the situation.
